5 Signs It’s Time to Replace Your Carpet
Carpet puts up with a lot. Shoes, pets, spills, furniture, kids and everyday foot traffic all take their toll over the years.
But an older carpet doesn't necessarily need replacing. A good professional clean can sometimes bring tired carpet back to life. Other times, the carpet itself has simply reached the point where cleaning won't fix the underlying problem.
So, how can you tell the difference?
Here are five signs your carpet may be ready for replacement.
1. The Carpet Is Visibly Worn
Take a look at the busiest areas of your home. Hallways, doorways and the main walking paths through living areas will usually show wear first.
If the carpet is noticeably thinner in these areas, the fibres are wearing away or you can begin to see the backing, you're looking at physical wear rather than dirt.
A useful trick is to compare a high-traffic area with carpet underneath a piece of furniture or in a rarely used corner. The difference can tell you a lot about how much the carpet has worn.
Cleaning can remove dirt. It can't put worn carpet fibres back.
2. Stains Keep Coming Back
Most carpets will collect a few stains during their lifetime, and many can be successfully treated.
The problem is when stains repeatedly return after cleaning or have penetrated deep into the carpet. In some cases, a spill can make its way through the carpet fibres and into the backing or underlay below.
Professional cleaning is certainly worth considering when the carpet is otherwise in good condition. But if you're dealing with numerous permanent stains across several areas, replacement may be the more practical long-term solution.
3. There Are Lingering Smells
Carpet doesn't just absorb spills. Over time, odours from pets, moisture and everyday life can work their way below the surface.
If an unpleasant smell remains even after the carpet has been properly cleaned, the problem may be deeper than the carpet fibres. The backing or underlay underneath could also be affected.
Before replacing the carpet, it's important to identify where the smell is coming from, particularly if moisture is involved. Installing new flooring without addressing the original cause can mean the same problem returns.
4. The Pile Has Become Flat and Won't Recover
The "pile" is simply the visible surface of your carpet, the fibres you walk on.
Some flattening is completely normal, particularly underneath furniture and in heavily used areas. Depending on the carpet, some of this may improve with vacuuming or professional cleaning.
What you're looking for is permanent crushing.
If busy areas remain noticeably flat while less-used sections still have plenty of texture and body, the fibres may have lost their ability to recover.
This is also why choosing the right carpet matters. Fibre type, construction and density can all affect how well a carpet handles regular foot traffic.
5. There's Physical Damage
Rips, fraying edges, burns, damaged seams, pulled fibres and exposed backing are all signs to investigate.
A small area of damage doesn't necessarily mean the entire room needs new carpet. Depending on the carpet and location of the damage, a repair may be possible.
Once damage becomes widespread, or you're seeing a combination of damage, wear and staining, replacement often starts to make more sense.
It's also a good opportunity to check the underlay. Carpet is only part of the flooring system, and the condition of what's underneath can affect the comfort, feel and performance of the new carpet.
So, Should You Clean It or Replace It?
If your carpet is structurally sound, still has reasonable pile and is mainly looking dirty or tired, start with professional cleaning. You might be surprised by the result.
If you're seeing permanent wear, damaged fibres, persistent smells, widespread staining or several of these problems at once, it may be time to start looking at replacement options.
There's no single age at which every carpet needs replacing. A better-quality carpet that's right for the space and well maintained can perform very differently from one that's unsuitable for the amount of traffic it receives.
The condition of the carpet tells you much more than its age.
